Since 1944, The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals has been working to end the commercial fur trade by exposing trapping cruelty and by protecting fur-bearing animals in the wild or in confinement. We also strive to promote peaceful co-existence with wild animals.
A dedicated volunteer Board of Directors manages our society and our work is entirely supported by donations.
Our top goals are to:
- Abolish the commercial fur trade
- Ban dog and cat fur in Canada
- Create opportunities to co-exist with wildlife (e.g. beavers and coyotes)
Note Regarding Charitable Status:
Due to our advocacy work to change legislation, our charitable status was annulled in 1999 by Revenue Canada (now the CRA). As a result, we are no longer able to issue tax receipts.
We operate as a non-profit organization (registration number S-4222).
Our major accomplishments:
- Influenced the European Parliament to ban the import of fur coming from any country still using the leg-hold trap (note: Canada, USA and Russia would later become exempt from this ban).
- Published over 250 newsletters (to date), which include articles and photos exposing all aspects of fur industry cruelty. Our newsletters are distributed all over the world.
- Launched many advertising campaigns highlighting trapping cruelty and the cat and dog fur trade (including television commercials, radio PSA’s, billboards, newsprint ads, online ads, posters and transit advertising).
- Spoke out publicly around the world to the media, governments, activist groups etc. in opposition to fur trade cruelty.
- Exposed trapping cruelty through the photos and the production of videos which included never before seen footage of animals suffering in traps.
- We were the first Canadian group to tackle the cat and dog fur issue on a national level.
- We were the first Canadian group to offer free humane solutions to communities strugging with beaver issues.
- Several high profile celebrities support our work including, Academy Award Winner Kim Basinger, Multi-platinum musician, Bif Naked and Loretta Swit, Jason Preistly, Kim Cattrall, David Suzuki and Bruno Gerussi.
- We've received hundreds of mentions throughout local, provincial, national and international media outlets.
